The Visakazi Widows Group emerged from the difficulties which many widows face in their

task of being solo head household. Illness, poor housing, low income to provide life for

their children and lack of capital to improve small business enterprises are currently

identified problems. These challenges are often caused by discriminating practices against

widows in some regions in Tanzania. These discriminations are especially property grabbing

from the in-law relatives and exclusion from the in-law family as well as some cases from

disrespectful neighbours.

The group involves 25 women who meet

twice a month. From these discussions several

projects emerged:

  • Training in different sectors such as
    business, environment, art
    craft and more
  • Acquisition of permits which allow
to enter into the forest reserve to collect weaving materials
  • Occasional fundraising in the community to supply school material for their children
  • A loan scheme was created that revolves among the widows themselves. This loans allows to set up own street food stall and increase the household income.
